Sunday Post: From a Distance, Sydney Opera House

This long shot of the Sydney Opera House was taken from the north-western side of the Harbour Bridge, at Milson’s Point near Luna Park. Looking past the colourful ferris wheel ride and the fluted towers at the Luna Park gate, past the ferry coming into the wharf, and still further looking beyond the northern pylons of the bridge and beneath it’s steely structure, across Sydney Harbour we see the Opera House on Benelong Point.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Growth

Every year we are amazed by the growth of the lotus. The water in the dam is smooth in spring, then leaves begin to appear, unfurling on the surface as the red lotus plant begins to shoot. Soon there are buds, then as they open into blooms more buds push up towards the light, the older flowers start to lose their petals, their inner seedpod swelling, so the waterscape changes constantly. In this photo you can see the lotus in each of its summer growth stages; leaf, bud, flower, pod and seed.

Sunday Post: Splendid

Jake gives some meanings of splendid, such as: wonderful, impressive, magnificent, phenomenal, charming, superb, ingenious, excellent, surpassing, very good, superior, first-rate, elegant, gorgeous, grand, brilliant, starry, resplendent, glorious, heavenly, gorgeous, exquisite, lovely, resplendent, pleasing to the eye, majestic, exquisite, lovely,  great, and memorable! Since it is that time of year again I thought of this very splendid and memorable birthday lunch my husband organised for me in 2005. I only want to show you the most splendid part of all …. an ice bowl of flowers in which was served the most delicious plum sorbet.

We had a restaurant at the time, so although the concept was all his there was a chef involved too.  My husband Stuart made this bowl by picking flowers for our garden, calendulas and hollyhocks and possibly more, arranging them inside a large bowl, then sitting another slightly smaller bowl inside the first bowl. He poured water into the gap and placed it all in the freezer. When it was frozen the inside bowl was removed to reveal the stained glass effect of flowers in ice! Isn’t it magnificent?

The chef appeared at the table I shared with my friends, carrying a croquembouche, sparklers sizzling, everyone gazed in delight, then burst into “Happy Birthday”! Here is a close up of the ‘cake’ after we had already begun to help ourselves. This was pretty special too.

And would you like to see a photo of the proud organiser and ice-bowl maker? Here he is! He is rather splendid and magnificent himself.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Hands

lives in their hands

When our children were growing up we had geese in our menagerie … here two of the boys who are shivering from swimming too long are cuddling baby goslings …. the thrill of lives in their hands. This photo is a scan of an old print …. not as clear as usual sorry!

This weeks challenge is Hands … follow the link to see other entries at The Daily Post.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unfocused

A strange challenge, but just right for this photo, where patterns and colours are pleasing but focus is just not quite there!

Peewee, or Magpie Lark, among fallen leaves

This is a common Australian bird, but has so far evaded my focus! This image was taken on my recent trip to the Central West, walking through the little town of Millthorpe late one evening when light was fading. I have always known this medium sized bird as a Peewee, but it is also called a Mud Lark, or officially a Magpie Lark.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Through

Attending a festival in Bhutan, the Buddhist monks had their own dedicated viewing space. They sat apart in peaceful comfort looking directly over the dancing and feasting below. I could see them through the open doorway of their rustic shelter.

This photo is my entry in the Weekly Photo Challenge, you can join in too!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Contrast

contrast between old and new buildings in sydney nsw australia

My city, Sydney, in which I had lived for most of my life until moving away to the south coast twelve years ago. When I was young the buildings were all gracious old ones, built of brick and stone, but in my teenage years the first tall glass and steel buildings appeared. Later still the tall towers and fluid shapes of current buildings … the skyline always changing. Looking up in Pitt Street you can’t miss the contrast between old and new!
