I love ferries, the fun of boarding across the gangplank, feeling the throb of the engine with the timber floor vibrating beneath my feet, choosing a seat and sitting back for the ride. 1. Oh, I know just what you mean, Christine! A trip on the Manly ferry still does it for me, and I can’t ever remember looking forward to my morning commute the way I did crossing from Neutral Bay in front of the emerging sails of the Opera House. I love punts, too – any way of crossing the water in an every day sort of way, but the best of all have to be the traghettos of Venice – or perhaps the little canoes they ride in the same standing manner, in the backwaters of Kerala.
